He travels to the Netherlands from Spain, arriving by steamboat, and is accompanied by his helpers, the Pieten. Sinterklaas is often seen riding his noble white horse, Amerigo (or Ozosnel).

Santa Claus, inspired partly by Saint Nicholas, gained his modern identity through American folklore. His story evolved in the 19th and 20th centuries, merging European traditions with new elements. Santa lives at the North Pole, where he works with elves to prepare toys. He travels in a magical sleigh pulled by flying reindeer, delivering gifts on Christmas Eve, ready for children to discover on December 25th.

1. The Arrival by Steamboat
Sinterklaas makes a grand entrance every year, arriving by steamboat from Spain in mid-November. This event is celebrated with parades, music, and crowds of excited children. The event is even broadcast live on Dutch TV.
2.Shoes by the Fireplace
In the weeks leading up to December 5th, children leave their shoes by the fireplace or door. They often include a carrot or hay for Amerigo, and in return, Sinterklaas leaves small gifts like chocolate coins, pepernoten, or marzipan.
3.Pakjesavond (Gift Evening)
The highlight of the Sinterklaas season is Pakjesavond. Families gather to exchange gifts, often accompanied by playful rhymes or poems written by Sinterklaas (or a clever family member).
4.Sinterklaas Treats
The Sinterklaas season is synonymous with special treats, including speculaas cookies, chocolate letters (representing the first letter of a child’s name), and banketstaaf, a pastry filled with almond paste.
5.The Helpers: Pieten
Sinterklaas is accompanied by the Pieten, his cheerful and mischievous helpers. Traditionally depicted as Black Pete, this character has undergone changes in recent years to reflect inclusivity, often appearing as colorful “Chimney Pieten.”

3.Milk and Cookies
It’s customary to leave out a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa as a token of appreciation for his hard work. In some cultures, carrots are also left for the reindeer.
4.The Elves’ Workshop
Santa’s team of elves work year-round at the North Pole, crafting toys and preparing for Christmas Eve. The workshop is often depicted as a whimsical, snow-covered haven of creativity.
