Discover Gstaad: A Timeless Alpine Gem

Living the Gstaad Dream

Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Gstaad is more than just a luxury destination—it’s a place where tradition meets modernity, offering an unparalleled blend of natural beauty, world-class hospitality, and exclusive experiences. For decades, this picturesque village has drawn the world’s elite, from Hollywood stars to European aristocrats, making it one of the most beloved alpine resorts. Having lived in Gstaad for two magical winters, I experienced firsthand the charm of this enchanting destination. In this blog, I’ll guide you through Gstaad’s rich history, its iconic landmarks, the best ways to reach it, and insider tips for enjoying its finest shops, hotels, and restaurants.

Living in Gstaad for two winters and working for Trudie Götz was nothing short of magical—like stepping into a real-life fairytale. I had the privilege of residing in a picturesque chalet just outside the village, with an unobstructed view of the legendary Gstaad Palace. Each morning, I woke to the sight of snow-dusted peaks and the gentle tolling of church bells, a scene so idyllic it felt like a dream.

What truly set Gstaad apart, though, was its unique blend of exclusivity and warmth. Despite its reputation as a playground for the elite, the locals were incredibly welcoming, fostering a sense of community that felt intimate and genuine. The weekends were a whirlwind of glamour and fun, especially when we headed to the legendary Greengo Club in the Gstaad Palace Hotel. It was the ultimate hotspot, where the music was lively, the atmosphere electric, and the memories unforgettable.

My days often started with a late macchiato at Hotel Olden, a charming spot where you could sip your espresso alongside jet-set regulars like Bernie Ecclestone and his dog. The casual elegance of the Olden made it the perfect place to relax and people-watch, with its cozy interiors buzzing with laughter and the occasional whisper of intrigue. Of course, nights often ended with impromptu gatherings at The Alpina Hotel, a hub of sophistication and good times. The parties were the stuff of legend, but as the saying goes, what happens in Gstaad, stays in Gstaad.

A Village Steeped in History

The story of Gstaad begins as a humble farming village in the Bernese Oberland. Over the centuries, its pristine landscapes and welcoming community captured the hearts of travelers. By the early 20th century, Gstaad transformed into a luxury retreat, thanks in part to the construction of the Montreux-Oberland Bernois Railway (MOB) in 1905. This railway made Gstaad accessible to visitors seeking tranquility amidst snow-capped peaks.

The opening of the iconic Gstaad Palace Hotel in 1913 marked a turning point. This grand hotel, perched on a hill overlooking the village, became a symbol of sophistication and exclusivity, hosting luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and even royalty. Despite its glamorous reputation, Gstaad remains true to its roots, with traditional wooden chalets and a commitment to preserving its natural environment.
