The Ultimate Guide to Polo: A Fascinating Look into the Sport of Kings

My Personal Journey into the World of Polo

During my time working with Scapa & Scapa Sport, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the world of polo. As a horse owner myself and a passionate horse lover, accompanying the Scapa polo team to tournaments and events wasn’t just a job—it became a gateway to discovering one of the most fascinating and intricate sports in the world.

Watching the power and grace of the horses, the skill and strategy of the players, and the camaraderie within the teams was truly a privilege. What deepened my respect for polo even further was gaining insight into the sheer dedication, discipline, and precision required behind the scenes. From the rigorous training of both players and horses to the tireless work of grooms and support staff, I quickly learned that polo is far more than just a game—it’s a lifestyle built on passion, teamwork, and respect.

From the early morning training sessions to the meticulous care for the horses, I saw firsthand the extraordinary effort that goes into every match. It’s not just a game; it’s a lifestyle, a passion, and an art form. Through my experiences, I gained a profound appreciation for the history, rules, and culture of polo, which I’m excited to share with you in this piece.

What Is Polo? A Quick Overview

Polo is often referred to as “the sport of kings,” but its origins are far more humble. The game, played on horseback, involves teams of four players who use mallets to hit a ball through the opposing team’s goal. While it may look like a straightforward game of skill and speed, polo is deeply strategic and demands exceptional teamwork, physical endurance, and mental focus.

The History of Polo: From Persia to the World

Polo has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Its roots can be traced to ancient Persia, where it began as a training exercise for cavalry units. Over time, the game spread across Asia, becoming a favorite pastime of nobility in India and China. In the 19th century, British officers stationed in India brought the game to England, where it quickly gained popularity among the aristocracy.

By the late 19th century, polo had made its way to the United States, Argentina, and other parts of the world. Argentina, in particular, embraced the sport, becoming the global epicenter of polo excellence. Today, the Argentine Open is considered the most prestigious polo tournament in the world.

How Polo Is Played: The Basics

Polo matches are played on a field that measures 300 yards long by 160 yards wide—the largest field in organized sports. Each team has four players, and the game is divided into periods called chukkas, which typically last seven minutes each.

The Positions and Their Roles:

1.Number 1 (Offense): Focuses on scoring and disrupting the opposing defense.

2.Number 2 (Midfield/Offense): A versatile position, balancing offense and defense.

3.Number 3 (Captain/Playmaker): The strategic leader, often the most skilled player.

4.Number 4 (Defense): Protects the goal and clears the ball to teammates.

The Handicap System:

Each player is assigned a handicap, ranging from -2 (beginner) to 10 (world-class). The handicap reflects the player’s skill level, and a team’s overall handicap is the sum of its players’ ratings. Matches are often organized by handicap levels to ensure fair competition.

The Cost of Playing Polo: Breaking Down the Expenses

Polo is known for its high costs, which make it one of the most exclusive sports in the world. Here’s a breakdown of the typical expenses:

1. Polo Ponies

•A top-level polo pony can cost between €30,000 and €200,000, depending on its training, bloodline, and experience.

•A professional player typically needs 4-6 horses per match to allow for fresh mounts between chukkers.

2. Horse Care and Maintenance

•Stabling, feeding, and veterinary care for a polo pony can cost around €10,000 to €15,000 per year per horse.

•Regular grooming, exercise, and shoeing add to the expenses.

3. Equipment

•Polo mallets, saddles, bridles, helmets, and boots cost thousands of euros.

4. Travel Costs

Professional polo teams travel with horses, equipment, and support staff. The cost of transporting horses internationally via plane or truck can range from €20,000 to €50,000 per season.

5. Team Expenses

Salaries for professional players, grooms, trainers, and veterinarians are typically covered by wealthy patrons or team sponsors.

Tournaments have entry fees that can exceed €10,000 per event.

Who Pays for It All?

The patron (the team’s financial backer) covers most of the costs. Patrons are often wealthy individuals or sponsors who love the sport and invest in a team to compete at the highest level. In return, they often play alongside professionals in tournaments.

The Structure of a Polo Team: Who’s in Charge?

A polo team operates much like a well-oiled machine, with each person playing a specific role both on and off the field.

The Patron: The Team Owner

The patron is the financial backbone of the team. They fund the horses, players, equipment, and travel expenses. Patrons are often wealthy business owners, celebrities, or royals who have a deep love for the sport. While they may not always be the best players, they often play alongside professionals in tournaments.

Professional Players

Professional players are the stars of the team. Each player has a handicap, which is a rating between -2 and +10 based on their skill level. A 10-goal handicap is the highest rating, signifying a world-class player.

Teams aim for a balanced handicap, where the combined total of all four players meets the tournament’s requirements. For example, a team might need a 22-goal handicap to enter a tournament, so the players’ ratings will add up to that number.

The Support Team

Behind every successful polo team is an army of support staff:

Grooms: Responsible for caring for the horses, including feeding, grooming, and preparing them for matches.

Trainers: Ensure the horses and players are at their physical best.

Veterinarians: Provide medical care to keep the ponies healthy and injury-free.

A Typical Polo Season: The Costs and Commitments

Playing polo at a professional level is a significant financial and time commitment. Here’s what a typical season looks like:

1. The Costs

Polo Ponies: As mentioned earlier, each professional player needs at least 4-6 ponies per match. Over a season, this can amount to €200,000 to €500,000 for horse maintenance and transportation.

Tournament Entry Fees: Top-level tournaments like the Argentine Open or U.S. Open can have entry fees exceeding €10,000.

Travel: Moving horses, players, and equipment to different tournaments—whether nationally or internationally—adds significant costs. Chartering a plane for horses can cost up to €100,000.

Support Staff: Salaries for grooms, trainers, and veterinarians add up quickly, often costing tens of thousands of euros per season.

2. Who Pays?

Sponsors: Luxury brands like Cartier, Rolex, and Ralph Lauren often sponsor teams, tournaments, or individual players to gain visibility in the polo world.

The Patron: Patrons shoulder most of the financial burden, especially in smaller teams or lower-tier tournaments.

Corporate Teams: Some companies fund polo teams as part of their branding and marketing strategies.

The Spectator Experience: Making the Most of a Polo Match

Attending a polo match is a unique blend of sports, socializing, and entertainment. Here’s how to enjoy it to the fullest:

Before the Match

Arrive early to explore the grounds, socialize, and grab refreshments. Many events offer champagne bars, picnics, or catered hospitality tents.

During the Match

•Pay attention to the fast-paced action. Watch how players use strategy to position themselves and their ponies.

•Listen for the sound of the mallet striking the ball—a distinctive “thwack” that signals an impressive play.

At Halftime: Stomping the Divots

One of the most beloved traditions in polo is stomping the divots. During halftime, spectators are invited onto the field to stomp down the clumps of turf kicked up by the horses. It’s practical, fun, and a great way to feel involved in the game.

Dress to Impress

Polo matches often have a dress code:

For women: Elegant dresses, hats, and wedges (heels can sink into the grass!).

For men: Smart-casual attire, such as blazers, chinos, and loafers.

Post-Match Festivities

Many polo events end with awards ceremonies, where the best player (MVP) and the best pony are recognized. It’s also a chance to mingle with players, sponsors, and other spectators.
