Why Your Next Trip Should Be to a Blue Zone
Looking for your next travel adventure? Why not choose a destination that’s not only beautiful but also one of the healthiest places on Earth? Blue Zones are regions where people live longer, healthier, and more vibrant lives. This year, we’re heading to one of these extraordinary places: the stunning island of Sardinia, Italy, to uncover the secrets of longevity—and, of course, enjoy some incredible Italian food along the way!

What’s So Special About Blue Zones?
Blue Zones, first identified by researcher Dan Buettner, are unique regions where a high number of people live to be 100 or older, all while maintaining excellent health. What’s the secret? It turns out that these areas share some key lifestyle habits—ranging from the foods they eat to how they stay active and connected with their communities. According to Buettner, Blue Zones are often found in hill regions, where communities have been growing simple yet delicious foods like beans, grains, and vegetables for generations.
The Five Blue Zones of the World
Here’s a quick look at the five Blue Zones, each with its own unique charm:
1.Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica: In this Pacific coastal region, people in the mountainous villages are twice as likely as Americans to live healthily into their 90s.
2.Okinawa, Japan: This beautiful island is home to the world’s oldest women, thanks to a diet rich in vegetables and soy, combined with daily activity and a deep sense of community.
3.Ikaria, Greece: On this tiny island in the Aegean Sea, residents live eight years longer than the average American and enjoy low rates of heart disease and almost no dementia.
4.Loma Linda, California: In this community of Seventh-day Adventists, people believe in taking care of their health as part of their faith, and they live longer because of it.
5.Sardinia, Italy: The island we’re about to explore! Sardinia’s eastern provinces have the world’s highest concentration of male centenarians, and we’re excited to find out why.

Our Sardinian Adventure: Discovering the Blue Zone Lifestyle
As we prepare to set off to Sardinia, we’re looking forward to more than just its breathtaking landscapes and hidden bays. Sardinia is one of the world’s Blue Zones, and we’re eager to experience firsthand how the people here live such long and healthy lives.
We’ll be visiting remote villages where time seems to slow down, and people live simply but fully. Their secret? A diet rich in locally grown vegetables, beans, and of course, a glass of red wine (or two). Family is at the heart of Sardinian life, and strong community bonds play a big role in their well-being. We’ll be immersing ourselves in this lifestyle to see what we can learn.
And let’s not forget the food! Sardinia is famous for its hearty pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and fresh Mediterranean flavors. We plan on indulging in all the local specialties while also trying out the traditional Blue Zone diet—because who says you can’t have your pasta and eat it too?
What We Hope to Find
We’re not just heading to Sardinia to enjoy the beaches and food (though that’s a big part of it!). We’re also on a mission to uncover the lifestyle habits that make Sardinians some of the longest-living people in the world. From their active way of life to their sense of purpose, we’re hoping to bring back some of these healthy habits into our own lives.
Could this trip help us unlock the secrets to a longer, healthier life? We can’t wait to find out!
