Swimming with Turtles in Paradise

A Adventure Like No Other

A Magical Day at Salaam Cave, Zanzibar

Salaam Cave

There are some travel experiences that stay with you long after you’ve landed home, and our recent visit to Salaam Cave on Zanzibar’s southern coast is one of them. Day and I set out on what we thought would be a fun excursion, but it turned into a beautiful, soulful adventure — turquoise waters, gentle sea turtles, laughter, a few snacks lost in the waves (me = a little lighter in the wallet 😄), and a moment of connection with nature I won’t forget.

Here’s the full story of our day — the setting, the vibes, the swim, the feeding, and everything in between — so you’ll have all the inspiration (and practical tips) to create your own unforgettable visit.

The Setting: Where Nature Meets Wonder

Our journey brought us to Kizimkazi Dimbani, on the southern coast of Zanzibar, where Salaam Cave hides like a secret oasis. It’s not one of those wild, party-style beaches — though word is spreading fast, and it’s certainly becoming more popular as more travelers discover its magic.

The cave lies in a small natural cove, surrounded by lush tropical greenery that drapes down the rocky edges like a living curtain. Bright yellow birds flutter through the air, busily weaving their delicate round reed nests that dangle from the branches like tiny hanging lanterns. It’s the kind of scene that feels straight out of a nature documentary — vibrant, peaceful, and yet alive with sound and motion.

As we made our way down to the cave, we could already hear the soft echoes of water splashing and laughter from early swimmers. The sunlight filtered through the leaves, painting patterns across the turquoise surface below. Day squeezed my hand, and for a moment we just stood there — taking in the view, the color, the energy — before stepping into this hidden world of water and wonder.

🐢 The Swim: Entering the Turtle-Realm

You don’t need any snorkel gear here — just your swimsuit, a smile, and the little bowl of seaweed you’re given before stepping in. You can choose to stay for half an hour or a full hour, depending on how long you want to float among the turtles.

The moment we slipped into the water, it felt like entering another world. The cave’s turquoise pool shimmered in the filtered sunlight, and before we even adjusted to the temperature, they were there — turtles everywhere.

They glide past you with the quiet grace of ancient beings, brushing softly against your legs, circling around you, sometimes even bumping gently into your side as if to say hello. You feel the smooth shell of one graze your thigh, or the faint ripple of water as another drifts behind you. It’s both magical and a little thrilling — the kind of moment that makes you smile in pure wonder.

Day loved it, though she still found it a little exciting — especially when several turtles suddenly gathered all around us, curious and eager for the seaweed we carried. There was soft laughter, but most people were quiet, completely mesmerized by the beauty of the moment. The atmosphere was calm, almost serene.

The turtles swim so close that you can often touch them and gently run your hand across their shell. But be careful — a turtle’s shell is far more sensitive than most people think; all their nerves are connected to it. Always touch softly, and avoid sudden movements. And a little tip from experience: they can bite… and yes, that really does hurt! 😉

This isn’t about swimming far or fast — it’s about floating, connecting, and letting the moment carry you. For a while, the world outside the cave disappears. It’s just you, the light dancing on the water, and the turtles gliding gracefully all around you. 🐢✨

What Made It So Special

  • Connection with nature: Being in the water with sea turtles, seeing them up close, and offering seaweed—it wasn’t just a photo opportunity. It felt like a moment of mutual presence.
  • Quiet beauty: The surroundings weren’t over-commercialised. The cave, the water, the turtles—just natural wonder.
  • Shared experience: Doing it with Day turned it into a “we’ll remember this” moment. When you travel with someone, those vivid memories bond you.
  • Mindful adventure: It wasn’t adrenaline-packed; it was gentle, reflective, joyous. A swim that also lets you slow down and appreciate.
  • Photogenic + fun: It definitely delivered for the camera, but it also delivered for the heart.

Important Things to Know & Two Tips to Make It Even Better

Here are the most important tips (plus a few bonus notes) to help you plan your visit and make the most of your day:

Tip 1: Arrive Early

The earlier you arrive, the better the entire experience becomes.

There are fewer people, the water is calmer, and the morning light is absolutely perfect for photos.

You also get the time and space to explore everything at your own pace — without rush, without noise, just quiet island magic.

Tip 2: Bring Cash — Always

Carry some Tanzanian shillings with you.most places prefer cash, and it just makes everything easier and makes your day smoother.

For us, the entrance fee for two people for one hour was $40, paid in cash.

It’s also useful if you’d like to buy extra seaweed bundles, support local vendors, or grab a fresh drink or snack at the beach afterwards.

Having cash means you can relax and support the community without scrambling for alternatives.

Bonus Notes (Important!)

Wear Water Shoes or Reef Sandals

The area around the cave entrance has rocks, uneven ground, and slippery patches. Proper footwear makes a huge difference.

Watch Out — They Can Bite

This is important, especially for families with young children.

I personally got bitten five times — not aggressively, but enough to feel it. One bite was even on my back, probably because a small piece of floating seaweed attracted attention.

It’s not dangerous for adults, but tiny fingers from small children could be at risk. Always stay aware.

Respect the Turtles

Observe, float, enjoy — but do not chase or touch them. The best moments happen when you simply let them come to you.

Bring a Waterproof Camera or GoPro

You will want to capture the underwater moments with the turtles. The visibility is stunning, and the footage becomes a memory you’ll treasure.

Stay a Little Longer Afterwards

The small beach and natural surroundings near the cave are perfect for relaxing, breathing, and reflecting after the swim.

Don’t rush off — let the experience settle into your bones.

Feeding the Turtles: A Playful, Unexpected Moment

One of the highlights (and yes, the moment where I lost a few snacks from my wallet 😉) was feeding the turtles.

a mix of laughter, gentle chaos, and unforgettable little nibbles. So i had to do this different the guide handed us seaweed bundles to give to the turtles. Watching them approach, curious and calm, mouths gently nibbling the seaweed

The turtles here know exactly who’s holding food. The moment you step into the water with your bowl of seaweed, they seem to sense it. Within seconds, you’re surrounded by curious faces, flippers swirling, and big eyes watching your every move. It’s endearing and just a little bit wild.

But a word of advice: be careful — they can bite! Not out of aggression, of course, but simply because they sometimes mistake your fingers for a tasty strand of seaweed. I learned that the funny way, with five tiny “love bites” as souvenirs on my hands and legs. Let’s just say, I left the water with both a full heart and a few new marks to remember the day by.

At one point, I thought I’d be clever and balance the little bowl of seaweed on my head while taking photos — a mistake I won’t repeat! The turtles instantly spotted it and started to climb toward me, determined to reach their prize. Lesson learned: never underestimate a hungry turtle.

Despite the playful chaos, it was magical. Watching these gentle creatures so close — feeding from your hand, brushing past your legs, completely at ease in their watery world — felt pure and joyful. A reminder that nature always finds a way to make you laugh and humble you at the same time.

—it felt playful in the most natural way. According to the descriptions of the experience, visitors are invited to feed the turtles to deepen the interaction.

But it wasn’t just fun—it also added a note of responsibility. Watching these gentle animals being fed, I considered the conservation side of the experience (you’ll find some commentary later). It felt special to be so close, while also being aware that we were in their environment.

The Food & Local Snack Moment

While the turtles and the water were the highlight of the day, a big part of the magic came from the journey itself with our private taxi driver.

He took us to small roadside stalls — places you would never find on your own — and bought us local snacks full of history and flavor.

A red banana here, a handful of spices from a tiny wooden shack there, each one with its own story. We sipped fresh coconuts he picked out for us, and along the way we shared travel stories, learned about Zanzibar, its people, its culture, and the quiet beauty of island life.

The Ambience & Vibes: That Day with Day

Spending this time with Day made it all the more meaningful. The setting was calm, the mood relaxed, and the joy of discovering something together just amplified everything.

We arrived early in the morning and found ourselves among just a handful of visitors. The light through the water had that crisp morning glow; the turtles were more scattered; the cave setting felt more private.

At one moment I looked over at Day and the sun was hitting her hair just right, the water around us was shimmering, and a turtle appeared as if gliding past in slow motion. I whispered (quietly, so as not to disturb) “This is perfect.” And in that moment, everything felt as though it was exactly as it should be.

After the swim and the feeding, we lingered. We relaxed on the shore, sat on a rock, chatted about life, laughed at my snack-mishap, took plenty of photos (you can imagine the photography session!) and just soaked up the beauty.
