The Ultimate Autumn Spectacle

Autumn arrives in vibrant colour, crisp air, and pumpkin-splashed fantasy at Pumpkimania, the annual pumpkin festival at Groot-Bijgaarden Castle near Brussels. From 19 September to 2 November 2025, this enchanting world opens its gates to visitors seeking magic, community, and fall flavours. Whether you’re a family, a craft-lover, a foodie, or simply someone who adores the mystical beauty of autumn, Pumpkimania is a must-see. Here’s everything you need to know—including 5 tips to make your visit unforgettable.

Pumpkimania

What is Pumpkimania?

Pumpkimania is more than a pumpkin festival. It’s a full sensory experience. Imagine the castle park transformed into an autumn-wonderland with thousands of pumpkins in every possible shade and shape. Sculptures inspired by the theme of the year—in 2025 it’s “Romans”—tower across the lawns: gilded columns, Roman helmets, gladiators, and Caesar himself, all made of pumpkins.

The festival is open 10:00 to 18:00, from 19 September to 2 November 2025, though weekdays are closed (Monday to Wednesday) except for the final stretch (27 Oct to 2 Nov).

5 Tips to Make Your Pumpkimania Visit Magical

To get the most out of your visit—especially if you want to avoid crowds, capture great photos, eat well, or enjoy the atmosphere—here are my top 5 tips:

  1. Go on a weekday if possible (but not too early/too late)
If your schedule allows, visit midweek (Thursday or Friday) to avoid the biggest crowds. Early mornings when it opens offer soft light for photos, cooler temperatures, and more space to wander among the sculptures. If you absolutely must go on a weekend, try to arrive right at opening time.
  2. Bring your camera & plan for photo spots
With thousands of pumpkins, artistic installations, Roman-themed columns and statues, there are photo opportunities everywhere. Some are more obvious—sculptures at the entrance, the views of the castle, Halloween route lights—but others are hidden: paths, under arches, through the trees. For golden hour (just before sunset), during Halloween evenings or a little before closing, the light can give magical tones. Also, consider bringing a small tripod if you want steady evening shots.
  3. Dress warmly & weather-proof
Autumn weather in Belgium can be unpredictable—bright sun one moment, rain the next. Layers are your friend: a waterproof jacket, good walking shoes, maybe gloves. If you’re attending an evening Halloween route, it may be colder and damp once darkness falls. Also bring an umbrella or a light rain poncho, just in case.
  4. Plan your meals & snacks
Pumpkimania’s kitchen offerings are part of the experience. Don’t miss new pumpkin dishes: the pumpkin panini, pumpkin-falafel, pumpkin fries … taste autumn in every bite. But expect queues during peak times (e.g., lunchtime on weekends). A strategy: arrive early, have a light snack before, enjoy lunch off-peak, or explore the food options later in the day. Also, bring water and perhaps some light snacks for between activities, especially if you have children.
  5. Make time for the Halloween evenings & special events
The Halloween route from late October until early November offers a different vibe — more theatrical, more atmospheric. If possible, stay for evening opening (from 18:00) to witness the light and sound effects, moving puppets, spooky décor. Also, check the schedule early for weekend highlights: the giant pumpkin weigh-in, or carving demonstrations. These events are not just fun—they are great memories and great content (photos, stories).

What to Expect

Here are the core highlights at Pumpkimania:
